Man is a hunter, a discoverer, a seeker by nature. He’s always been searching for what he needed to evolve, adapt, feel good. And also to learn, to have fun, to know. On one hand, the hunter, on the other the prey, the object of pursuit, desire, sometimes. The book. Entity that lives on the shelves of bookstores, shelves of libraries, in digital archives as abbreviation and in paper ones in the form of a cardboard with a location. Man seeks book, locates it, buys it, borrows it, takes possession of it in many different ways in fact.
And what if, sometimes, were the books looking for us and coming to us? What if the book we need for various reasons were ringing our bell at home like a courier, a pony express or the pizza guy? Yes, in Italy, in many regions, there is a Bibliobus, serving municipalities, or provinces, and libraries that allows you to get volumes in those areas and districts of the city not served by libraries, in municipalities that don’t even have a library or simply serving as a reference loan point and also traveling where the libraries are. Milan, Florence, L’Aquila, Trento and many other cities, maybe even yours, have a real traveling library that works like the “real” loan and exchange libraries. A way to promote culture on the one hand and to help those who already love culture but do not have the ability to reach it in a practical and easy way on the other: a dedicated service to citizens and to their thirst for knowledge and culture.
The amount and availability of volumes varies from city to city, mostly around two thousand units, but the mode is essentially the same: a bus driven by qualified staff that make regular stops, books are divided into sections as usual and no sector is excluded, there are children’s books, non-fiction, novels, latest releases, all that you would normally find at the library. Some municipalities offer the possibility to consult the volumes on board and others have added performances, shows and animations, as well as readings and meetings with authors, which are held on board, just like in normal libraries. Itinerant loan point and maybe, why not, home delivery, that for once turns the object of our research in active subject: the book will find you!
