UNO, that’s it. As if to say, the only one. Simple name for a lavish volume of photography: the author, Giampaolo Ricò, is a well known photographer of Parma who has devoted part of his 25-year career to the study of floral subjects. By the time this artistic exercise became a guide to inner changes: from a simple reproduction of shapes or colors created by nature flowers, pictures have become the mirror of the attitudes of those who observe and portrays them.
In particular it shows the sensuality that, without any decency, shines through petals, pistils and very often by the relationship with other flowers: shapes and colors become the main theme of beautiful love stories. The images are accompanied by photographer’s phrases: feelings, moods, flashbacks, from an emotional, visual, evocative life story.
Born in Parma in 1964, Giampaolo Ricò initially worked as an assistant for Miro Zagnoli (Reggio Emilia), dealing with still-life and in 1968 he moved to New York, where he attended a long internship at the Visual Studies Workshop working at the same time as an assistant for Robert Brosan, Pete Turner, Mikhail Tcherevkoff, Richard Avedon. Ricò’s photography is marked by the pursuit of quality, deep emotions, interiority. By choice, the work in black and white is made on film, developed and printed by hand. To interpret flowers the photographer has used a 4×5 optical bench, sheet film and a particular type of light, where flow rate serves as an optical fiber of American construction.
Fermoeditore studied for these images a larger size, a cover in essential style and coated with PVC dithered effect (inspired by photographic slides films, used by Ricò in his works); the inside is enhanced by a thick paper, the brilliant images “pierce” the page, texts are obtained by the superposition of glossy and matte paintings.
The special versions of UNO, with the box inspired by the old photo paper boxes, containing inside a photo hand-printed by the author (also available as autographed) will be presented for the first time at the Mondadori bookshop of Euro Torri mall (Parma), on Friday 17th of May at 18.15, with an exceptional speaker: Paolo Barbaro of C.S.A.C. (Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione), University of Parma, professor of the history of photography. To follow, a drink with the bookseller and publisher.
