Numinal is a system of symbols that the designer Danilo Seregni has collected and put aside over the years; most have met him through his work of art and took form of works at first – paintings, small sculptures and lamps – in which he dealt with the depiction of animals in a symbolic key (theriomorphism). Numinal was born from the need to make sense of this collective work of artistic research.
What is Numinal?
Concretely, it is a system of 12 main symbols (Centers) associated with 36 secondary symbols (Cardinals) which in their original pattern form a ring, a kind of mandala, in which each of them occupies a precise position. Each set, composed of a center and four Cardinali, constitutes a Cosmo (also called World). For example, the Cosmos of Lumen, the River, Pinocchio etc. Both centers are associated with both Cardinals meanings. The centers are the major themes that govern man’s existence (Life, Transformation, Mystery, etc.), Cardinals are more specific aspects that come into play when these major issues face individual stories(Thought, the Open, Harmony, etc.). Being a combinatorial system all the items can be mixed and recombined giving rise to infinite combinations thus creating symbolic “New Worlds” on which everyone can practice to create dimensions of meaning and interpretations.
What are your goals? How does the system “work”?
The general symbolic scheme, structure and narrative content that may underlie Numinal backdrop and materialize in different forms. The first is a “game“, still in the prototype phase as regards the hardback, but already playable on-line in the “game” of the site www.numinal.net. I invite everyone to take part into Numinal “game” reading simple instructions. In return, each will receive a high definition custom image and a result of reading proposed by me on the meaning emerged. There are already people who have used the image resulted from the combinatorial game to make a personalized T-shirt, the icon of FB or as background for the desktop. Others have simply printed them and turned into paintings… all images are distributed with a Creative Commons license, exchangeable and can therefore be used for personal and non-commercial.
Numinal is also a fairy tale, currently available as an illustrated e-book entitled The Prince of Numinal, in which drawings form the backdrop to the events of the fairy-tale prince Arghimarte.
