The first cat of M. Chat appeared in Orléans, France, in 1997; the artist has managed to remain anonymous until 2007, when Thoma Vuille was “caught” while drawing. The height of his fame was in 2004, when Chris Marker made the documentary Chats Perchés: at the premiere of the film at the Centre Pompidou in Paris M. Chat painted a huge kitty of 30 by 30 meters on the pavement of the square outside the Centre .
As a good graffiti artist, Vuille occasionally run into legal problems: recently was sued for having “chatted” a wall of the metro station Châtelet in Paris (all the details on his blog).
