An untitled disc able to predict the future. The death of one of the greatest drummers in rock history, an earthquake in Los Angeles and a mysterious black dog. These elements unite in the fourth Led Zeppelin album, a disc with no name. But the drummer has a name: it’s John Bonham, historic Led Zeppelin drummer found dead on the morning of 25th September 1980 in Windsor, in Jimmy Page’s villa. The night before Bonham went, drunk as usual, to Page’s house and seeing his state the bandmates laid him on a bed, in a room alone. Bonzo, as his friends called him, was an alcoholic and that night he faced his demons alone. The next day he was found dead on the bed, choked on his own vomit. A life of excess had brought him to death, just as when a levee breaks.
A cursed album had foreseen everything, the same album that is improperly called ”IV” and which told in advance, through Going to California, the earthquake happened in Los Angeles. When Led Zeppelin, with the exception of Plant who remained in London, went to California to record the album. Bonham death was told in advance in Four Sticks and When the Levee Breaks. Four Sticks, named after the fact that Bonham used four mallets to play it, seems to be the farewell letter of the drummer. While When The Levee Breaks tells the story of a life taken to excess and a dam rupture, leading to death in a house, the original version written by Joe McCay, who also died young for his not ordinary life.
Inside the cover of that album there are a black dog and a hermit.
Then in another song, The Battle of Evermore, we hear about a lord of darkness and a lady of light, that is about Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The songs on that album were written by Robert Plant, that Robert Plant who saw himself as the lord of darkness, and that his friends called ”hermit” for the time he spent living alone in a house in the middle of a forest. In addition to Black Dog, the black dog appears several times: during the recording the band retreated into a building that once housed a mental hospital and an orphanage. Many said that it was cursed, but Page adored it. In its park, as numerous eyewitnesses can still confirm, a large black dog appeared out of nowhere, a Labrador, that at the end of the recording disappeared forever. And on the cover of the album without a name, the hermit is close to a black dog as if to indicate his true identity, as if to say “It’s me”
It is a coincidence or Robert Plant, the hermit, the lord of darkness, was able to predict the past, the present and the future of the band drama? A band that met his end as a result of the death of Bonham, when members of the group enacted a statement that sounded like an epitaph.
Years later Led Zeppelin found themselves celebrating their entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on that occasion, Jason Bonham, son of John, played the drums.
