Matthew Cibic, Matali Crasset, Caterina Crepax, Jacopo Etro, Marco Ferreri, Elio Fiorucci, Forma Fantasma, Martí Guixé, Lorenzo Palmeri, Karim Rashid, Paul Ulian, Mila Schön, Gianni Veneziano are some of the 50 creatives (designers, artists, designers and other) invited by TAM TAM, the non-school for new design, to interpret the image they have of themselves, on a vessel specially designed by Alessandro Mendini. Among the artists invited, Cinzia Munari, author of our column “Design in 400 words”.
TAM TAM is an experimental educational format taking place in the evening, with no entrance fee and no place, that was born in February 2013 from an idea by Alessandro Guerriero, Alessandro Mendini and Riccardo Dalisi. This year, the school invited 40 known creative volunteers as teachers and selected 140 students, chosen not on the basis of age and qualifications but according to their talent. The project is promoted and managed by the homonymous non-profit association to which have been given the proceeds of the auction, which was held on December 17th, 2013.
So Alessandro Guerriero explained Immagini d’Io (Pictures of Myself): «Authors belong to different and anthropologically far realities. We asked to each one of them to decorate the surface of the vase designed by Mendini – which is white after the first firing – with a self-portrait or, exceptionally, with a “self-portrait” of another person. The result is a choral work, a small parade, a private show… It is also a new exploration on the pure, infinite and ancient world of the porcelain vase. Summary of a work as a whole, but it is also a constellation of personal visual stories, glances, whispers, cries: a kaleidoscope whose pictures acquire meaning from random combination of small and decentralized elements that express their identity. This extraordinary “vasery” will be displayed in an exhibition, until each work, each fragment will be chosen by people to make it live in their own home or in the domestic context of their friends, brothers, lovers.»
Immagini d’Io is a great invitation that TAM TAM addresses to community in the development of this new “collective” model, less than a year after its founding, already represents a unique opportunity in the international creative training field.
