“Photography is commemoration. A way to stop a moment in life”. This would be enough to summarize the work of parmisan photographer Caterina Orzi, 55 years old, some of which dedicated to lens. In his works, more than 100 exhibitions in Italy and abroad and others in progress, natural and human component blend in suggestive images, the second in support of the first. The human part is the artist’s belly, provisioned of leaves, flowers, rocks, and light. Yes, light.
And you can immediately recall Impressionists who “painted with light”, and she described herself as “an impressionist of XXI century, aware of being an instrument. In nature, everything is already there. Light gives life to things, I photograph natural elements and the time of my photos follow nature’s, I know that at a given time there will be a special light and it will be the perfect time to take pictures. It is not like re-examining things done by others; you take back what time has given us”. Giving new life to the elements, the subjects of the photographs become epiphanies, the merit of a beautiful photo “lies in the artistic sensibilities of those who shoot”.
In her work, light is so special that it seems remodeled or rebuilt, red is dense, green is bright, the white dazzling or wrapping around subjects, and where flowers, plants and fruits stand for colors the human body often appears in black and white, hence the feeling of photo editing. “I use a Canon Eos 1000 based digital without lens, I cannot use Photoshop and my pictures are all in color, light is the reason why some pictures seem shot in black and white and the shades are so alive they seems artificial. Photoshop is for those who do not accept mistakes, and man should get used to admit failure. It can facilitate work and I am not against those who use it but for me it is exhilarating living the rhythms of light”. Whether it’s soaring or shaving it is light the main character, able to harmonize a photo or make the subject stand out. (Caterina showed me the photos on digital and printed, there is no intervention, ed.)
And the human element? She uses her own body, naked and never vulgar, no embarrassment, “I began doing performances and then switched to photography, the choice of body and belly is linked to the fact I am a woman and as such, as an artist, more advantaged in the ability to interpret and create something. We feel more and in a different way, I have used and still use my body to express myself and because I have something to say”. It is a rare case that being a woman is an advantage, “I quote an article by the Eritrean journalist Yarcona Pinhas (she reads me a passage, ed), argues that women have one more intelligence, that of procreation. We have the advantage of being able to bring to the world and this, for an artist, it is a further step in a journey of life and creation”.
