In Saxony, the German region of Dresden and Leipzig, the beer is not just a inevitable beverage but a real cultural thing, part of a people that produces and drinks it at least from a thousand years. In fact, according to the bishop Thietmar von Merseburg, on September 13, 1015 the castle of Meissen, attacked by the troops of the Polish Prince Mieszko, caught fire, and in the absence of water the brave women of the village tried to douse the flames with beer. The incident was taken as the official date for the beginning of a long tradition of brewing in Saxony, and has always been the occasion of festivities: why thousandth anniversary was set up a special exhibition and bubbly, which celebrates the history of beer in the region and explores the cultural and folklore from the Middle Ages to today. Staged at the Albrechtsburg, the exhibition “1000 years of beer in Saxony” opens on April 23, the national day of beer in Germany and will be somewhat interactive, with sensory experiences and tastings with experts. And on weekends until November in the courtyard of the castle you will appreciate the specialties of the various breweries Saxons with menu selections of beers always different.
The protagonist of the celebrations in Meissen will naturally be Schwerter Brauerei, the oldest brewery of Saxony. Historical brand synonymous with tradition and quality, since 1460 produces excellent award-winning beer whose raw materials – hops and barley – are strictly zero km; today Schwerter Brauerei has specialized in hospitality and catering with various local brand. Have to mention two other breweries-symbol, the Radeberger Exportbierbrauerei, founded in 1872 near Dresden was the brewer’s official court of Saxony, while the Landskron Brauerei, in Görlitz, is famous for its delicate variations of beer high quality.
The beer lovers must also write down the date of 28 June, day of the popular festival in Oberlausitz (Upper Lusatia), when the scenic Eibauer Bierzug – historical procession of more than 100 horse-drawn carriages festively decorated representing the major breweries in the region – will march through the entire territory of Kottmar, east of Dresden, in a parade at its twenty-third edition.
